IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN SUPPORTS THE SPITFIRE’S FIRST AROUND-THE-WORLD FLIGHT

The Swiss watchmaker continues its passion for aviation with a historic journey.

In an adventure that has never been attempted before, British pilots Steve Boultbee Brooks and Matt Jones are making aviation history this summer in a Silver Spitfire. Covering more than 43,000km and 30 countries, this journey will be the first around-the-world flight in a Spitfire, which was originally an extremely agile and powerful British fighter aircraft built back in 1943. Flying around the world in a Spitfire was the daring idea of Boultbee Brooks and Jones, founders of the Boultbee Flight Academy. As the only officially recognized Spitfire flying academy in the world, they give pilots the opportunity to learn how to fly the iconic fighter aircraft. Now restored after a two year process with 14 specialists, the Spitfire has taken off on 5th August 2019 from Goodwood, UK and will be making 100 stops along its global voyage.

The main partner and official timekeeper of the flight, IWC looks back on an 80-plus year history of manufacturing pilot’s watches, especially for the Royal Airforce pilots for over 30 years. The Swiss watchmaker has even previously commemorated the Spitfire plane with several special-edition watches, demonstrating its long-standing passion for aviation.

IWC celebrated the Silver Spitfire’s take-off on 5th August 2019 with 400 guests at a farewell party and private dinner on the Goodwood Estate. Among the guests were British actress Rosamund Pike and former Formula One star David Coulthard, both IWC brand ambassadors, British actors Taron Egerton and Finn Cole, as well as TV and radio presenter Dermot O’Leary. When the Silver Spitfire eventually took to the skies, it was accompanied by three two-seater Spitfires and the Royal Air Force as it began its much-anticipated circumnavigation of the globe.
