The Rolex Air-King
The Rolex Air-King has unprecedented historical value amongst Rolex collectors because of its close relation to the original Rolex Oyster watches. Created in honour of British WWII aviators, the Air-King is the final survivor of the ‘Air’ line of watches and in the early 1960s was fitted with a self-winding movement.
The 34mm case of the Air-King was considered large at the time, but the latter part of the twentieth century saw a gradual move towards larger watches. As a luxury watch became as much a statement as an instrument, an aura of timelessness was built around classic designs such as the Air-King.
The current incarnation of the Air-King retains the simple, recognisable features of the original Rolex Oysters. The 34mm case has become popular amongst women as well as men who prefer a more subtle, elegant look.
Like the Explorer I, the Air-King carries large Arabic numerals at 3, 6 & 9 making it easily readable, and like every Rolex each Oyster Perpetual movement is certified by COSC guaranteeing reliability.
