Tudor Black Bay GMT Pepsi
Tudor watches have made more than a comeback, they have taken over. Tudor has become the go-to sport watch for tastemakers, collectors, retailers and watch journalists and the brand has completely captured the £2000-5000 sector.
The Black Bay collection is the perfect start to a watch collection; the introduction of the chronograph last year also helped bolster the brand’s desirable position. This year Tudor unveiled a bicoloured Black Bay GMT at Baselworld and the world rejoiced.
The Black Bay GMT Pepsi has a sleek stainless-steel 41mm case with polished sides and a satin-brushed top. It’s water resistant to 200 meters and has a black domed dial with a mix of triangular, circular and rectangular hour markers. This is where the differences to other iterations begin; the Pepsi has a bidirectional bezel. It is evenly halved with burgundy and blue which is a combination of the original colours of the first to Black Bays. For our 2018 version the aluminium insert is completed in a matte finish and is marked with a 24-hour scale that reflects the other big changes inside the Black Bay, namely its complication.
Moving across the dial, 24 hours has a bright red hour hand that is tipped with the iconic Tudor snowflake. It’s also useful that the local hour hand can be adjusted in one-hour increments without interfering with the minutes and seconds. In terms of movements Tudor manufacture the COSC-certified MT 5652 with a fully integrated architecture, variable inertia balance, silicon balance spring, and a 70-hour power reserve. The success of the watch and this calibre is a guarantee that we’ll be seeing more of it in the future.
Like all Black Bay’s, the Pepsi effortlessly merges a traditional aesthetic with a more contemporary feel. It’s the bold design that really gives this Black Bay a refresh; coupled with the complication this watch feels thoroughly modern while paying homage to the classic Tudor style.
