Santos de Cartier
The Santos de Cartier Collection
In 1904 the great aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont complained to his friend Louis Cartier about the impracticality of having to use his pocket watch to make time measurements when flying. The result was Cartiers first wristwatch - a personal gift to Santos-Dumont that would eventually be displayed in the Paris Air Museum next to the 1908 Demoiselle - the last aircraft built by Santos. Santos-Dumonts celebrity status helped make the wristwatch popular amongst men in the early 20th century. The Cartier Santos was launched to the public in 1911 and with its geometric form and rounded corners was an early expression of the Art Deco form. In 2004 the Cartier Santos 100 was launched to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the original Santos de Cartier watch.Other popular models include the Santos Galbée.
